Visiting with Nicholas Nybro

Arriving in the small workshop in Ryesgade, seeing mannequins wearing extravagant dresses and hats, and shelves full of design books, fabrics, feathers, taxidermy birds and boxes labelled “thingies” and “fringes”, you can’t but be engulfed by Nicholas Nybroes wonderful universe that both overwhelms you, intrigues you and makes you want to take one step closer to stick your nose in everything he does.

Recently one of Denmark’s new and more pompous designers invited me to visit him in is small workshop – which he is soon to leave, due to the growing business – a visit I’ve been wanting to make ever since I saw his SS15 collection walk down the runway last August, and took me by storm.

Nicholas Nybro, as a brand, is still in his early years and he’s experimenting with everything from exciting materials and design techniques to crazy shapes and even unorthodox show venues like the one for his AW15 collection, which was shown at a small night club space in central Copenhagen this January. I’m drawn to his courage to show some shapes, silhouettes and colors that, after his arrival on the Danish fashion scene, obviously has been missing in Danish fashion, so this Monday, I went to visit with him to figure out how he comes to do what he does and where he get’s his inspiration for his collections.

As you could read in my first post about Nicholas, his first show collection was inspired by the Queen of Hearts from Alice in wonderland – an inspiration which brings an adventurous playfulness that the collection after it also showed. The AW15 collection was inspired by kids’ dress up games in gransma’s clothes, which is shown in huge silhouettes, velvety materials that might just as well have been on your nan’s sofa pillows and the prints feature the things you’ll find when going through her old stuff.

Besides getting all the stories behind his clothes, getting to touch it, photograph it and discuss it, I also get to wear it. Yup, on Monday at the Elle Style Awards, I’ll be putting on one of the dresses from Nicholas’ SS15 collection and I can’t wait(it’s soon cool!).
