Recently, I found myself describing my own style as two polar opposites, “I’m a mix of an 80 year old lady and a 5 year old girl in a 24 year old body“, I wrote. I love colors and fun and at the same time I’m all in for midi skirts, old things and brown leather accessories. This Friday, the rate of 80 year old and 5 year old was around 10/90 – a brown leather bag snuck in and otherwise I went for the fresh and fun look. I personally love it – straw cap, citrus print shirt and dungaree dress, yum!

But it had me thinking. Usually people always think I’m younger than I am. At 19 years old at my first Paris Fashion Week, I was told that someone believed me to be “not a day over 16!” and it did also take me some season before many of the other photographers respected me for my work as a street style photographer, even though I had clients such as AsosElle and NastyGal. When I go out, I often have to pull out my ID to prove that I’m over 21 or even 18, which also happened Friday wearing this outfit, of course. I love dressing more colorful thank most other Scandinavians, but I think tha my way of dressing often makes people think of me as younger than I am, and take me a bit less seriously than girls in more neutral clothes.

That’s my experience at least, having to be extra extra grown up to be taken seriously enough – but what’s yours? How do you think of people in colorful outfits versus people in neutrals? And how do you feel that your personal style effects people’s conception of you? Does it have to be a convention that colors and fun equals childishness and that you’re less serious?

And, lastly, how do you like my look?
